Education Steeped in a rich history of pioneering and agricultural abundance, this is Nebraska, home to the Platte River Valley and Great Plains, numerous cultural and recreational opportunities, and a strong, expanding economy. Nebraska is poised to grow its industry with a strong economy and support from its state government, universities, and local businesses. Nebraska’s balanced economic base and vast market potential have already provided a profitable home for five Fortune 500 Companies. The state is actively interested in expanding its economic base with life science industries and has allocated 16 percent of its tobacco settlement funding to biomedical research. Nebraska has traditionally been well-cushioned against large fluctuations in the national economy due to its combination of farm and non-farm industries. Agriculture is the driving force for Nebraska’s economy, though more of Nebraska’s income has come from other industries in recent years. Expanding and diversifying Nebraska’s economy remains a top priority for state government. Nebraskans often speak of the "good life" they enjoy in their home state. This is made possible by quality public K-12 schools, safe and clean communities, an array of higher education opportunities, and a strong work ethic. In order to maintain this "good life," the state has charted a plan for creative and proactive leadership in education and technology that will well position the state for the future. Nebraska is home to numerous cultural and recreational opportunities, many reminiscent of the 19th century westward travels by explorers and pioneers. Nebraska, conveniently located near the center of the country, has readily available transportation systems in place to provide businesses the means for efficient product delivery and reception. Nebraska, located in the north-central United States, is home to the Platte River which flows west to east through the central part of the state into the Missouri River. The Platte is too shallow for navigation, but is an important source of water for irrigation, municipal and industrial uses, recreation, hydroelectric power production, and wildlife habitat. The Platte River Valley has been an important east-west human transportation corridor throughout history. Several Native American tribes, mainly the Pawnee, Ponca, Omaha, Oto, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho, lived in the Nebraska region prior to settlement by white explorers and fur traders in the 18th century. The pioneers transformed the state from a land considered unfit for cultivation to an agricultural oasis. A list of select guides and reference books about Nebraska. |
